Kaiser Permanente hospitals recognized among best in the U.S.

U.S. News & World Report rates 37 Kaiser Permanente medical centers as ‘high performing’

Kaiser Permanente hospitals are among the best in the nation for delivering high-quality care, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2024-25 Best Hospitals rankings. These recognitions reflect the commitment and efforts of the physicians of Permanente Medical Groups to deliver high-quality care and great outcomes to patients.

In the publication’s 2024-25 Best Hospitals rankings, 37 Kaiser Permanente hospitals earned “high performing” ratings for one or more measures. High performers are among the top 10-20% of all hospitals rated.

U.S. News evaluates more than 5,000 hospitals nationwide. The annual rankings analyze how well hospitals perform in 35 specialty care areas, common procedures, and common patient conditions. According to the evaluation of nearly 5,000 hospitals nationwide:

The number of Kaiser Permanente hospitals rated “high performing” for specialty categories:

  • Stroke care: 32
  • Heart failure treatment: 29
  • Kidney failure treatment: 16
  • Heart attack treatment: 16
  • Colon cancer surgery: 8

Nationwide, 4 Kaiser Permanente hospitals are in the top 50 for an area of specialty care:

  • Los Angeles Medical Center is 23rd in California for overall care and 40th nationwide for neurology and neurosurgery.
  • Vallejo Medical Center is 28th nationwide for rehabilitation services and treatment.
  • Both of our hospitals in Anaheim and Irvine are 47th in the nation for pulmonology and lung surgery.

At least one Kaiser Permanente hospital is nationally ranked or rated as “high performing” in these 8 specialty care areas: cardiology and heart surgery, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery, geriatrics, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and lung surgery, rehabilitation, and urology.

Kaiser Permanente medical centers are also ranked among the best in their states for overall care. Moanalua Medical Center in Honolulu is ranked second in Hawaii, and Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center in Oregon ranked 5th. In California, our medical centers in Anaheim, Baldwin Park, Fontana, Irvine, Los Angeles, Oakland, Ontario, Richmond, Roseville, San Diego, San Diego-Zion, San Francisco, Santa Clara, South Sacramento.

“Our hospitals’ performance in their home states reflects the breadth of medical expertise across Kaiser Permanente’s footprint and the patient-centered care delivered by our multidisciplinary teams of doctors, nurses and other clinicians,” said Nancy Gin, MD, FACP, executive vice president of quality and chief quality officer for The Permanente Federation, the national umbrella organization for the more than 24,000 physicians who provide care to Kaiser Permanente’s approximately 12.4 million members. “These rankings and ratings underscore our consistency as one of the finest health care organizations in the country.”

High-quality, equitable care

U.S. News Best Hospitals report also honored success in caring for patients in vulnerable communities. These patients often face many social and economic challenges in accessing health care.

Three Kaiser Permanente hospitals received the new recognition: Fontana, Ontario, and South Sacramento hospitals were named as Best Regional Hospitals for Equitable Access.
